I kinda thought that this game might be a disaster. Let me explain. As the camera screened the bench during the national anthem one of the boys had his finger firmly planted up his nose. Was this game going to be just as embarrassing?
As it turns out the Mooseheads won their second game of the season in a bold 6-1 routing of the Val d'Or foreurs. In fact, their first win was also a 6-1 routing of the Val d'Do Foreurs. This is creepy.
Hockey friend the Mooseheads good.
The points didn't start adding up until the end of the second period but once the boys realized that yes, indeed, they can score they really got on a roll. Now that I also know that everyone can score I will not settle for any more of this no-goals (or 1-2 goals) shenanigans they keep trying to pull on me.
The scoring started in the first period when Sawyer Hannay, getting out of the box, received a pass (omg tape to tape) from 'the second coming of' Carl Gelinas. Hannay, head down, tore towards the goal putting the puck on Raffaele D'Orso (and his dreamy Movember mo-stache), scoring and then falling down and knocking over the net. Yeah. WHAT A STUDMUFFIN*!!!
At that point I took the cookies away from Lemieux (I was really liking Lemieux) and gave them to Hannay.
The rest of the period was goalless, as was most of the second. Then at the 15 minute mark Halifax had their 2nd goal. Then their third... and a fourth. Val d'Or snuck one in there too but that one is irrelevant.
In the third the boys just kept on rolling. A goal by Gabe Desjardins proved that blingee shaming does work and that Gabe has mad "fist pump skills". Bahm rounded out the scoring with a power-play marker to make the final score 6-1. I just wanna keep reminding everyone that the score was 6-1.
It would be easier to point out who didn't get points last night but then the boys who did get points would not get their props. Pointy boys include:
Hannay (1st goal)
Amyot (2nd goal)
Knotek (3rd goal, assist on Bahm goal)
Stoddard (4th goal)
Desjardins (5th goal)
Bahm (6th goal, assist on Stoddard goal)
Clarke (assist on Knotek goal)
Abeltshauser (assist on Amyot goal)
Costello (assist on Desjardins goal)
Gelinas (assist on Hannay goal)
Grant (assist on Bahm goal)
Bety (assist on Stoddard goal)
Lemieux (assist on Amyot goal)
Hannay's goal marks his first QMJHL goal, Stoddard's was his first regular season goal as a Moosehead.
Moose also dominated the stars:
HAL - Corbeil-Thériault, Mathieu
HAL - Knotek, Tomas
HAL - Clarke, Garrett
Now admittedly Corbeil was totally boss, stopping a number of breakaway chances, numerous rebounds as the Foreurs were piled around his net, and a weird backwards pass by Abeltshauser that ended up directed towards our own goal. In total Corbeil stopped 32 of 33 shots thrown on net. There may have also been a bold, sexy glove save. It turned out that in the end it was he, the goalie, who got the cookies. Shocking I know...but goalies. You know I have a weakness. I recommend he share since he got cookies for the last game too and we don't need him getting fat (or having a baby, getting married, going bald or letting Sean Coulton steal his profile).
To make life more exciting I shall put up some inneresting** stats:
1) Did you know that Abeltshauser and Gelinas are in the top 25 of QMJHL rookie scorers? They are. Konrad stands at #21 with 10 pts, 2 goals and 8 assists in 15 games. 'Dr Carlossus' is 24th with 9pts, 4 goals and 5 assists in 21 games. Gelinas is also 20th amoung rookies for goals scored.
2) Having scored another 2 goals on the power play last night, thus going 2/6, means that the power play is apparently back on track. The powerplay is currently at 22.6%, 8th in the league, but actually equal to Cape Breton and Shawinigan who occupy the 7th and 6th spots.
3) Linden Bahm has 4 points in his last 4 games. Dreams can come true.
4) Tomas Knotek has reached the 20 point mark. 20 pts in 20 games.
5) Charles Bety had 6 hits and won 12 of 20 faceoffs. Unsung hero stuff that some people like to forget about. Not me though.
6) I kinda like Clarke but will admit that he is kind of a douchebag. Really, what was with the leglock? Anybody who can piss off Charland so much that he would fight in the 'no fight' time at the end of the game must be massively annoying. My Foreurs boyfriend Keven Charland doesn't play like that! Admittedly, that is not a stat.

All my friends say that, of course, it's gonna get better
MOOSE WIN 6-1. I KNOW. I am so excited.
It is like I don't have to break up with my Moose for being bad in bed... or at hockey. Finally, satisfaction. Now all I have to do is teach them to cook and make sure they clean up after themselves and they might even be marriage material....that is if I were the kinda girl who wanted to get married, which I am not.
No pressure, right? I did not think I was actually applying that much pressure with my sitting there in my seat and my buggy eyes and my creepy staring and occasionally cheering. Boys are so hard to predict. From now on I will let them take the lead in all of our romantic endeavors.
Lets' get the facts out of the way - The Moose were in Val d'Or to take on the Foreurs. This is what the team looked like.
Forward lines:
Grant, Knotek, Randell
Gelinas, Cheremetiev, Bernard
Bety, Desjardins, Lemieux
Costello, Andrews, Bahm
Hannay, MacDonald, Stoddard, Brown and Pelletier played GQMFs tonight.
Scoring summary
1st period:
Gelinas from Bernard and Clarke (PP)
Grant from Randell (PP)
Randell from Abeltshauser and Gelinas
2nd period:
Charland from Sauve (for Val d'Or)
3rd Period:
Randell from Grant and Knotek
Bahm from Andrews
Randell (NO ASSIST)
Stars were
3: Abeltshauser
2: Gelinas
1: Randell
The nitty gritty:
The Moose put 26 shots on net compared to the Foreurs 18. Mathieu Corbeil gets the win in net and hopefully a little bit of confidence, especially since the majority of the Foreurs' shots were listed as dangerous. The Foreurs on the other hand were forced to pull their goalie after allowing 3 goals on the first 11 shots. The Moose had a total of 11 DS in 26. They seemed to be concentrating their efforts on quality not quantity and appeared to be driving the net more. A few of tonight's goals were off of rebounds. This is EXACTLY what we want to see. Our puppies are learning how to fetch.
The Foreurs had the edge in hits, and apparently most of those were directed at Abeltshauser. So he has been tenderized! That just makes him softer for the cuddlin' and possibly tastier should I choose to bbq him, Hansel and Gretel style, after I fatten him up on all the Kipferls I made tonight*. Yes, I actually baked cookies.
Grant is back in form - The one armed man even had a goal and an assist.
Randell was a shot blocking machine. At some point, after he had blocked the bazillionth shot on the PK I had actually said "Oh dear God Travis Randell" out loud, like there was sessy times going on or something...and he hadn't even gotten the hat trick yet.
So, there I was before the game wondering why I had not yet offered Knotek any cookies when I realized that it is because I am waiting for him to do something amazing -like get a hat trick, or even have a three point night. Little did I know that we would actually have a hat trick but it would not be Knotek getting it. I may have to lower my standards to give the Captain his chance... but I would really rather not have to do that. I want to see him do amazing things. All I expect from rookies is that they learn to sit like a good dog. Knotek CAN do so much more.
Anyway, at the end of the first period I had decided that Gelinas would get the cookies. Then Randell stole his thunder. I am sure Gelinas will eventually top my list during some game in the near future if he keeps up his stellar play.
Keven Charland had the only Foreurs goal, which resulted from a turnover by Pascal Amyot. As a result Amyot is sharing the sofa with Metcalfe tonight. This is because I do not enjoy turnovers unless they are from a bakery and also because I am tired of Metcalfe's penalties.
Apologies to Sawyer Hannay for spelling his name wrong a couple of posts ago. I am an awful girlfriend. The error has been corrected.

*Dear Konrad,
Feeling homesick? I know! It is impossible to get quality marzipan in this town. For a little taste of home just remember that they sell Ritter-sport at just about in every pharmacy in downtown Halifax. For Zentis marzipan you are going to have to make a special trip to Pete's frootique. That is pretty much all we have here. There is also a German bakery called The Gingerbread Haus which is next to the Sobey's on Queen St in Halifax . It is not great but it will suffice should you be desperate for Strudel. The Colby Ale house in Dartmouth also has German food but I have never eaten there so I can not attest to its yummyness.

Who the hell do Val d'Or think they are?
The Val d'Or Foreurs have just defeated the Drummondville Voltigeurs by a score of 2-1. Soooooo close to a Shut out. Val d'Or goaltender Raffaele D'Orso stopped 48 shots on net for the win. Someone please give this kid some sexual favours. Unfortunately, Kulikov got a goal for Drummondville with 5 seconds remaining in the game. What a total asshat!
This puts the Foreurs 5 points up on the Moose in the race for a playoff spot. Luckily the Moose have two games in hand.
I am trying to add a new poll to the sidebar but blogger is being a huge bitch (not unlike me most of the time). I will get it up eventually*.
I miss my live hockey, but better safe than sorry I guess. Unfortunately for the Moose, the game against Saint John has been rescheduled for March 14th. The Moose need every win they can get and closing out the season with an exhausting 3 games in 3 days is not an ideal situation.
Less than a month. I can't believe there is less than a month left to the regular season. I don't know how I feel about that. I think I need to pick up and move on. This year's team liked to make me suffer on purpose, I swear to God. Well, not the whole team...
Wait, shouldn't I be talking about hockey? Poll! Soon! Right hand sidebar! Count on it!

I'm sorry
I should not have taken it out on you. You know how I get when you lose a game you should have won, I have been drinking, and I have been denied my Fullerton. Did I mention that I was drinking?
I didn't really watch the game. I am, therefore, not in a position to judge except to say that losing 6-2 against a team like the Foreurs is totally unacceptable. Is it lonely down there in the basement? The other 5 bottom dwellers all got points last night. Val d'Or got 2, Lewiston got 2, Bathurst got 2 and, Baie Comeau and Chicoutimi went into shootout with the BC Drakkar walking away with 2 points. This does not bode well for you my sweet ungulates.
I am just going to check the newspaper now to see if Cam says you battled hard but did not get the lucky bounces. Wait a sec... nope! Willy Palov's article says nothing.
I just wanted to let you know that it is not about lucky bounces. It is about being in the right place at the right time. You can't blame all of your failures on 'lucky bounces' for the other team. In truth, the 'lucky bounce' is a rare thing... and it actually involves some puck bouncing stuff. Remember the time we were playing Saint John and the puck bounced over Amyot's stick, over Mayer's stick and landed right near a Moosehead who was facing an open net, who then did not fan on the shot - that is a lucky bounce combined with right place/right time stuff AND net hitting skillz.
About last night:
Moose were 0 for 6 on the PP, while the Foreurs were 2 for 5. Our special teams need to smarten up. They were doing OK for a while there but in recent games have gone completely kaboomy. Mooseheads have the worst power play in the league with a 14.2% efficiency. They have also allowed 11 short handed goals this season. Sad really!
Tomas Knotek got both of the Moosehead goals with assists by Jessyko Bernard *hugs*, Justin Pender (same old tip in of a Pender shot from the blue line- welcome back), and Ben MacAskill. At some point, in what little game I did watch, I heard John Moore cooing over Charles Bety. Good for Bety, now he can start a bromance with our radio announcer.
The good:
The bad/the ugly:
I still can not decide if anymoose deserves cookies.
The Future:
Tonight the Moose play the Rouyn Noranda Huskies, the only team in the league with a zombie on their roster. Yeah, you heard me right!
What! You didn't know that Brad Yetman was a zombie? He totally is! He was bitten by a zombie on Dec 29 2008 and had transformed into a full fledged zombie by January 16th. Shawinigan knew that he had the zombie virus. Being a top tier team they feared some sort of punishment from the CHL come playoff time, especially considering that they are good enough to be Memorial cup contenders this year. So they went ahead and traded him on Jan 9th to an unsuspecting Rouyn-Noranda, just days before 'the rage' kicked in full force.
So there you have it: Rouyn Noranda 53 points, 22 ahead of the Moose, and up by one zombie.
Our 'pet the Yeti'* says he does not want to allow defensive defencezombie Yetman to get a goal against him. Given the outcome of last night's game I wonder if the two Yetmans will even be given a chance to battle (HA) it out. I, for one, want Brad to get a goal. It will be a league milestone. First goal ever scored by a zombie in the CHL.
*as opposed to, oh say, 'fear the Yeti'. Nobody fears Mark Yetman.
** I had originally said 3 in 9... cuz the Q game page is inconsistent between its goalie stats in the team section and its shot stats at the bottom of the page.
edit - i watched a bit of the first from the archives. Honestly how many sticks and pucks did the moose take to the face?

About last night:
- Mark Yetman got the start but was pulled before the start of the second period for having allowed 3 goals on 10 shots**. Yetman gets the loss.
- Mathieu Corbeil played the second and third periods allowing 3 goals on 27 shots.
- Raffaele D'Orso allowed 2 goals on 35 shots and had an assist. Oh la la. See ladies - there are benefits to playing the puck.

The good:
- Piette is still coming out on top in the faceoffs, winning 13 of 23.
- Jessyko was throwing his weight around. 3 hits.
- Eric Louis-XVI was able to play.
- Pender returns.
- Knotek, because 2 goals is never bad.
- pictures
The bad/the ugly:
- Mark Yetman. I don't know what those shots looked like but the numbers are ugly.
- Eric Louis-XVI was there in name only.
- Giving the Foreurs 5 power plays.
- Kevie (stars- oh hooray), Frankie (don't poke my goalie in the face) and Rafie combining for 4 assists + a goal by "les sourcils" Sauve. I love them but technically they are the enemy.
I still can not decide if anymoose deserves cookies.

you have got to be kidding me
The Moose are playing the Val d'Or Foreurs - the team we are tied for LAST PLACE with. I return home from the UNB vs St Mary's game (loss for UNB) only to find that the Moose are losing 5:1 midway through the 2nd period. Hang your heads in shame. If this is all the energy you can give me than this is all I can give you - shittyest blog post ever. NO FUCKING COOKIES FOR YOU.
*edit - no Fullerton was NOT playing for UNB, but he did shave his head... and is still a total hottie, touque and all. UNB hates me.

Three Little Words
Wow. We won. The Halifax Mooseheads defeated the Val d'Or Foreurs 6-3.
I have new relationship feelings for my team full O'rookies. I want to stay in bed with them all day making out, cuddling and eating cold take-out pizza. They make me smile so much my face hurts. I know it has only been one game, and I barely know them, but would it be premature of me to say 'I love you'?
Goalies:
Mathieu Corbeil
Thank you, thank you, thank you everyone who voted in my boyfriend poll for choosing Mathieu Corbeil as my new number one QMJHL boyfriend. #30 is my favorite hockey number (mmmmmMarty). I had some fuzzy vision, long-distance idea of what he looked liked but I had a morbid fear that because he is so tall he would look like Blanchard, but no, he is a cutie. He was at the start of the team intro line-up, and was on the screen for a good chunk of time so I got a good squeelfilled peep.
I tried to get some pics and he may not be very photogenic (and emits a blurr to prevent me from getting an in focus pic) but let me assure you that he was indeed kinda cute. Now I understand that it may seem shallow, and skills are important for a number one boyfriend, but how can I date a guy I find unattractive? This is why a boy needs a combo of skills and looks. He is very good at opening doors. He may also have been good at stopping pucks...we should let him try.
Raf D'Orso
How many times have you stood me up? Every year I get excited about you coming to town, put my best date clothes on, get my hairs did, and then you stand me up. It is about damn time we had this date D'Orso. I cannot live with just seeing you on TV or on the interwebs.

You are beautiful. I know that five goals against (plus one empty net goal) is not ideal for you, and that your team lost which will make you feel sad, but may I just say that I really enjoyed watching you and your mad puck handling (and you did stop 33 pucks). Sure accidents happen (the clash and the falling down, getting caught out of your net and then getting bailed out by your own player) but I am of the opinion that a goalie has to take chances - the benefits far outweigh the cost of those boo-boos. The rolling, the kicking, the post-to-post movement on your knees, the awesome deflections (so accurate), all the risky puck-handling business...can we get married? You will have to shave that hideous chin-strap for the wedding.
Mark Yetman
You can sleep on the sofa tonight... and tomorrow night! You know I do not like to be mean to my players even when they deserve a kick in their well padded shins. We did not win because of you, we won in spite of you. OK maybe I should not blame you, but who can I blame? Dallaire? Stay away from that guy!!! Keep Mathieu away from him too. Tonight, when the team plays Cape Breton, go and visit Scott Gouthro (CB goalie coach) hug him and steal his essence. Put a few of his hairs in your trapper for luck. You know the motto - "Whatever it takes."
The game:
Lets just say that I am very glad that I have made Linden Bahm
my lower tier forward boyfriend. Not only does he have delightful pillowy lips but he is such a hard worker. Last night he had two goals (the game winner and an empty netter) and two assists, thus earning him 3rd star of the game. Go Bahm.
New Captain Graham did not have a very good game. He got a five minute major for charging and then got kicked out for the rest of the game. Just as I suspected he did indeed shave his neck. As a bonus, during the 10 questions, when Shannon asked "steak or sushi?" Graham was the first boy that I recall to have EVER answered sushi. How unexpected!!! I never would have guessed that Graham was a sushi guy. I will add that to my "mental personality database". We can go on sushi dates. I am now officially in love with Graham.
Justin Pender was first star of the game, most likely for his two goals and as a strange attempt to prove to us that he was worth keeping over Andrew White. Maybe we could have kicked Mark to the curb and gone with two rookie goalies. Andrew's number 22 has already been given away to Gerrad Grant. Did I shed a tear? I was thisclose. I miss his "call me" goal video. Oh, I would Andrew but I don't have your number *weeps*. Travis Randell has switched his number to 16.
Alex Noel(foreurs) - ha. Did you think I would forget you? You had the best eyebrows in the first round of the QMJHL 2008 draft. I never forget a good set of eyebrows. Thus I stalked you with my camera all night. It was hard to catch the eyebrows because of that stupid helmet.
For a real game review read Willy Palov or Matthew Wuest.

You know the motto - "Whatever it takes."The game:
Lets just say that I am very glad that I have made Linden Bahm
my lower tier forward boyfriend. Not only does he have delightful pillowy lips but he is such a hard worker. Last night he had two goals (the game winner and an empty netter) and two assists, thus earning him 3rd star of the game. Go Bahm.New Captain Graham did not have a very good game.

Dogs are good at playing catch up (and fetch)
Oh Saint John
I wanted you to do well for the sake of your 'tender (like maybe a 2-1 loss in regulation) but I did not want you to actually win. It was warm and toasty all alone up here at the top, with the sun shining on only the Moose. Now we have to share our mountain with 22 other guys and it is getting crowded. The 1 point difference between us feels a bit too risqué for a good Irish Catholic girl like myself. Leave it to Fullerton to make me feel all dirty.

The Saint John Sea Dogs defeated the Val d'Or Foreurs with a 3-2 decision in the shootout.
Some pics are already available at the Foreurs website.
Travis Fullerton turned aside 36/38 shots, while Raffaele D'Orso blocked 38/40 in regulation /OT combined. Powerplays were split 1/4 for each team. I watched part of the first and second periods (en Francais) and saw some pretty nice blocks by both Fullerton and D'Orso - the shiniest bauble being a stop by Fullerton about 10-12 minutes into the second where Fully's legs were splayed across the top of the crease while simultaneously making an awesome glove save. uhhhhhhgggggg drool. Then I got all hot and bothered and had to take a cold shower.
All silliness aside - I am confused about the awarding of Stars
- 1.VDO - D'Orso, Raffaele
2.VDO - Sauve, Maxime
3. SNB - Liske, Payton
Christopher DiDomenico and Payton Liske got the goals in the shootout for Saint John. Liske got the tying goal in the third with an assist from Despres.
More details are available at QMJHL.
So it makes sense to give Sauve and Liske stars, but why D'Orso, and why did he get first star when his save % was only marginally better than Fullerton's (0.95 vs 0.947) and Fullerton was the winning goaltender. What is up?
I am not saying that Raf did not deserve the star, as I did not see the whole game. Nor am I denying him stars because I am bitter about being stood up by D'Orso earlier this season. I even watched him in the QMJHL Canada Russia challenge on November19th (Oy ...that rebound) and that was after he stood me up for our date at the Metro Centre on Nov 10th. Seeing a goalie do his thing live is so much better than on TV though (and way better than on Telus live feeds), which is why I will accept another date next season when he comes calling.
I want to like D'Orso for all the silly reasons a girl could like a goalie:
1) He is small like a Toskala, or a Marty #3 (Turco)
2) He plays a hybrid style...which is more entertaining than butterfly
2) He is from the community of St. Leonard, Montreal...land of Brodeur and Luongo
3) Openly admits to liking Brodeur. Brodeur is an obvious choice for favorite goalie, which is why I think no one else will admit to liking him.
4) He can make the douche-y chinstrap facial hair work
5) He has unilateral control over his eyebrows.
6) He lifts his mask a lot.
If someone knows why D'Orso deserved 1st star please let me know.
If someone has found a cure for my eyebrow fetish could they also let me know - i talk about eyebrows A LOT.

Mathieu Perreault (ABT) - 101 (59 GP)
Claude Giroux (Gat) - 97 (51 GP)

Baie-Comeau defeated Chicoutimi 4-2 to regain the top spot in the Telus and are the top seeded team overall with 92 points (65- 43, 16, 2, 4). The top seed is a scary merry-go-round that I would rather not have to ride on a day-to-day basis. Let's just say it is always either Baie-Comeau or Rouyn-Noranda and leave it at that, unless something drastic happens, or at least until the season ends on March 16.
